Accessibility at Middlesbrough Theatre

We’re committed to making your visit to Middlesbrough Theatre as welcoming and comfortable as possible. On this page you can find out more about our venue and its different spaces to help you plan your visit.

The theatre is located in Linthorpe on The Avenue (postcode TS5 6SA). Main approach is via The Avenue.

Bus stops are located on The Avenue, Orchard Road, and Emerson Avenue.

Local bus routes include number 29, number 12, and number 13.

There is an on-site car park with five accessible car parking bays for Blue Badge holders, to the left of the main entrance.

The Middlesbrough Theatre Box Office is open from 10am until 3pm, Monday to Saturday.

The counter in the entrance lobby is 89cm high, and has an induction loop installed.

The main Box Office desk in the foyer is 74cm high. It’s only open during performances.

The foyer has limited seats available. Way-finding signage provides directions to the theatre facilities.

A food and drink kiosk is available in the foyer. Staff assistance is available for customers if needed.

Male and female toilets and a wheelchair accessible facility are available on the ground floor in the foyer.

The male toilets have 1 ambulant cubicle and 1 standard cubicle, plus 3 urinals.

The female toilets have 1 ambulant cubicle and 5 standard cubicles.

Baby change units are available in the accessible and female toilets.

There are two double-leaf doors leading from the foyer into the centre stalls of the auditorium, and two further double-leaf doors leading in from the stairwells either side of the foyer.

There is a sloping floor from the entrance doors leading down towards the stage.

Handrails have been provided for mobility support on either side of the auditorium.

Access to the lower and upper circle is by stairs only. There is no lift.

There is a Sennheiser hearing enhancement system in the auditorium. Headsets are available from the Box Office. Personal portable loops are also available.

There are 6 wheelchair spaces in the Stalls with the following dimensions:

  • space 1 – 63.5 x 81cm
  • space 2 – 63.5 x 81cm
  • space 3 – 63.5 x 81cm
  • space 4 – 63.5 x 81cm
  • space 5 – 63.5 x 81cm
  • space 6 – 71 x 81cm

All seats in the auditorium are numbered. Please ask staff for help if you need it.

There are 10 steps from the ground floor to a landing, then 8 steps to the bar and Lower Circle. There are handrails on both sides.

There are 9 steps from the bar to a landing, then 7 steps to the Upper Circle. There are handrails on both sides.

The bar is located on the first floor with access via steps only. However drinks can be pre-ordered from the kiosk and are available to collect in the foyer during the interval.

Some performances have strobe lighting, pyrotechnics, or smoke haze. Please ask the Box Office for information before booking.

Some shows have signed performances or relaxed performances. Please ask the Box Office for information.

All theatre staff are Dementia Friendly trained.

All assistance dogs are welcome at the theatre, but please tell the Box Office at time of booking so a space can be reserved.

You can get a free companion ticket if you need help from another person to be able to visit the theatre and evacuate safely in an emergency. Please request your Personal Assistant ticket when you make your booking. Unfortunately, you cannot book companion tickets online. Please contact the Box Office on 01642 81 51 81.

Personal Assistant tickets are available at our discretion. We’ll need to see evidence that you’re eligible. Once we’ve accepted your evidence, it will be valid on our booking system for a 12-month period (or 6 months for a doctor’s note).

Proof of eligibility:

The following forms of evidence may make an individual automatically eligible for a free companion ticket in addition to their ticket:

  • a letter from their council confirming receipt of disability allowance
  • local authority disability pass (this does not include a Blue Badge)
  • local authority visual impairment card
  • Disabled Persons Railcard
  • doctor’s note (valid for 6 months only)
  • CEA Card

Please bring along any medical equipment you need, but please let the Box Office know when you book.

All staff are trained to assist with evacuation in case of an emergency.
